Artist Statement

Shelley outside her home studio in Southeast Queensland, Australia

Based in Southeast Queensland, I am an artist deeply influenced by the rich tapestry of folklore, ancestry, and the natural world, creating abstract and expressive works that celebrate the intricate connections between these themes. My artistic practice is a reflection of my lifelong journey in creativity, shaped by my background in fashion and a profound appreciation for the cycles of nature.

My work often explores the interplay between earth's rhythms and the stories passed down through generations. I find inspiration in the wonder of children and their innate curiosity, which fuels my desire to capture the magic of the world around us. Through mixed media techniques, I explore separate disciplines, including acrylic paints, watercolours, printing, fabric manipulation, and ceramics, allowing me to express complex ideas and emotions in vibrant, tactile forms.

My goal is to create immersive experiences that invite viewers to reflect on their own relationships with nature, femininity and the narratives woven into our lives. By intertwining folklore with the natural cycles of the earth, I hope to foster a deeper understanding of our shared human experience and inspire a sense of wonder and connection.

Through my art, I aim to encourage dialogue about our environment and heritage, promoting a sense of unity and respect for the world we inhabit. Each piece is not only a celebration of beauty but also a call to recognize and honour the stories that shape our identities.
